| |
For insurance and discounts worldwide, make sure that you purchase an international student ID card before you leave! This card will get you into many museums for free or for a very reduced price, in addition to deeply discounted student travel, and more!

| Scholarships |

Scholarship money is available for study abroad, but you have to apply for it to get it! There are many search engines that can help you locate scholarship money, but there are several places to apply.
LBCC Scholarships
If you are a currently enrolled Long Beach City College student, click here to apply for a LBCC scholarship: http://scholarships.lbcc.edu/. Keep in mind that the deadline to apply is December 4, 2009, at 5:00 p.m. Make sure that you indicate on your application that you are applying for a scholarship for study abroad. (This can be in addition to whatever other scholarship you apply for.) Every year our students win scholarships for study abroad!
DiversityAbroad.com Scholarships
Students from CCIE member colleges are the ONLY community colleges eligible for this scholarship, and LBCC is a member. Eight (8) Summer $1,000 scholarships will be awarded to students who study abroad with a Diversity Abroad partner organization and who are deserving students that come from diverse economic, educational, ethnic and social backgrounds. Pell Grant Scholarships
The Gilman International Scholarship is for students who receive a federally funded Pell Grant. Click this link if you are currently receiving a Pell Grant as part of your financial aid: www.iie.org/programs/gilman/index.html.
CCIE Scholarships

| European train passes |
| |
For an inexpensive way to see all of Europe, consider purchasing a train pass that you can use in any combination of European countries for however many days you choose. Students often find this type of travel extra economical because they avoid hotel expenses by taking night trains. Remember: Europe is a lot smaller than the United States! You can often travel from one country to another in a matter of hours!

| Cell phones |

Cell phones, also known as mobile phones, can be extremely useful in a foreign country, but most of the time your American cell phone won’t work outside of the United States. Some phones can be taken abroad if they are a GSM phone, but first you must unlock them, and once abroad, you must get a new SIM card with a new telephone number. In most countries, you only pay for the calls that you dial; you do not pay when you receive a call, and you do not sign up for a “plan”; you just “pay as you talk” (if you dial the number). Essentially, they work like a prepaid account. Text messages are almost always cheaper than phone calls. In many countries, you can add money to your account at any ATM.
Since cell phones are so common throughout the world, in many countries much easier to acquire than a landline, you can probably get better rates on phones and plans in the country you visit than in the United States.
